African Burial Ground National Monument

Visiting this memorial was a sad and jarring experience. Unfortunately, it was under construction and the indoor portion was closed to the public at that time. I wasn’t aware of this project until Marianne told me about it, and that made me feel badly since I’m a born and bred New Yorker. I guess there’s a lot to the city that I still don’t know about. Something with such social importance like this should be a required visit for all students in NYC. Although I wasn’t old enough to remember the controversy surrounding the building that was placed on the actual burial site, I can only imagine the difficult dialogue it unleashed at that time.
